The Task:

In teams, we were tasked with creating a full apparel line for Crescala Collective that merged contemporary design with circular fashion principles. This end-to-end project included developing brand inspiration, concept, and a defined target consumer. We produced eight finalized designs, complete with color palettes, textiles, finishes, trim details, CLO3D renderings, and a supporting marketing plan.

The Process

  • The project began by researching and defining the brand identity and target customer. This involved analyzing consumer behavior, market trends, and competitive positioning to create a detailed customer profile. The insights from this report shaped every creative and strategic decision made throughout the line development.

  • Next, we curated a visual inspiration deck to express the overall mood, direction, and creative concept of the collection. This included imagery, textures, silhouettes, and color palettes that aligned with both the brand ethos and the lifestyle of the target consumer. It served as a visual foundation that guided the aesthetic and tone of the designs.

  • Building from the concept, I sketched 30 original designs that explored a range of silhouettes, garment types, and stylistic approaches. These were rough ideas meant to experiment with form and direction while responding to trend forecasting and the consumer’s lifestyle. This stage encouraged creativity and volume before refinement.

  • From the initial sketches, I selected key looks and compiled a comprehensive design package to present for critique. This package included illustrations, material inspiration, and concept rationale. The feedback received helped identify what worked, what needed development, and how the designs aligned with the brand vision.

  • Based on critique, I refined and improved the selected sketches, ensuring consistency in style, practicality in design, and alignment with the brand's values. Refinements included proportion adjustments, silhouette tweaks, and added details like trims and finishes. These sketches became the foundation of the final line.

  • To integrate digital design, I created a 3D-rendered t-shirt using CLO3D software. This allowed me to experiment with fabric drape, fit, and technical construction in a virtual environment. It also helped visualize the garment as it would appear in real life and enhanced the professionalism of the final presentation.

  • I translated my refined designs into technical flats using Adobe Illustrator. These detailed, line-based illustrations included front and back views with stitching, seam placement, and construction notes. Flats are essential for communicating design intent clearly to production teams or manufacturers.

  • A second design package was submitted after revisions and further development. This round demonstrated growth, attention to feedback, and deeper cohesion in the line. It reflected finalized looks, material choices, and confirmed design direction.

  • We created a spec package that detailed garment measurements, materials, construction notes, and trim details. This technical document ensures that designs can be reproduced accurately and consistently. It bridges the gap between creative design and product development.

  • To complete the project, I developed a marketing plan that supported the line launch. This included defining the promotional strategy, messaging, and visual content across relevant platforms. The goal was to effectively position the collection in front of the intended audience and reinforce brand identity.

  • As the final stage of the project, we presented our complete line to a panel of industry professionals and academic critics. Our audience included faculty members from VCU as well as Jodie Sandman of The Crescala Collective and Megan Peterson from Cotton Inc. The presentation required us to clearly communicate our brand concept, design rationale, technical development, and marketing strategy while responding to live feedback and questions. This experience strengthened our professional communication skills and provided valuable real-world insight into how to present and defend a cohesive fashion line in front of industry leaders.

The Outcome:

The outcome of our presentation exceeded expectations. Our group presented to a panel that included Jodie Sandman from The Crescala Collective, Megan Peterson from Cotton Inc., and a board of faculty critics from Virginia Commonwealth University. We were honored to be awarded Critics’ Choice, received a grant to support future creative development, and will be featured in Women’s Wear Daily. Additionally, we were recognized as Most Improved from start to finish, a recognition that made the experience especially meaningful. I’m incredibly proud of the dedication, creativity, and growth my team demonstrated throughout the project. Being acknowledged by respected industry leaders and educators affirmed the strength of our concept, execution, and collaborative process.
